Extraction yield from a tea brew. Enter the leaf weight, the liquor volume and the total dissolved solids to get the solids extracted and the yield.
Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.
–
Solids extracted (g)
–
Extraction yield (%)
–
Liquor TDS (%)
Equation: Solids extracted = liquor volume × liquor density (1 g per mL) × TDS % ÷ 100. Extraction yield % = solids extracted ÷ leaf mass × 100.
Method: Extraction mass balance for tea liquor; liquor prepared by ISO 3103 (preparation of liquor for use in sensory tests); TDS by refractometer (AOAC 932.12 practice).
Assumptions: Liquor density is 1 g per mL; all dissolved solids came from the leaf; the liquor was mixed before sampling.
Limitations: TDS by refractometer is an estimate for tea liquor — it is not a full chemical analysis of the extract.
Rounding: Solids and yield to 2 decimal places. Intermediate values are not rounded.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value.

Worked example: 10 g leaf, 500 mL liquor, 0.40 % TDS. Solids = 500 × 0.004 = 2.00 g; yield = 2 ÷ 10 × 100 = 20.00 %.
Enter values above to see results.
Tea liquor is usually 0.3–0.6 % total dissolved solids. Measure TDS with a refractometer on liquor cooled to the same temperature each time. Tool 174 of 500 — GIFSQ
