Measure a sodium cut in mg and percent, and check it against the reduction target you set.

Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.

–
Reduction (%)
–
Sodium cut (mg)
–
Target met
Equation: Reduction (%) = (original − reduced) ÷ original × 100. Sodium cut (mg) = original − reduced.
Method: Reduction against a user-set target; the US FDA voluntary sodium reduction targets (2021 guidance, updated 2024) set category targets rather than a single percentage, and Health Canada's sodium reduction guidance works the same way. A 25% cut is the common reformulation benchmark used in this tool's worked example — it is not a regulatory threshold.
Assumptions: both sodium values are per the same serving size; the target is a percentage cut, not an absolute level.
Limitations: a percentage cut says nothing about the final level — a 25% cut on a very salty food can still leave it high in sodium; salt (NaCl) is 2.5 × sodium by weight.
Rounding: reduction to 1 decimal place; sodium cut to 1 decimal place; intermediates unrounded.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value.
Worked example: Sodium 400 mg cut to 300 mg against a 25% target: reduction 25.0%, cut 100.0 mg, target met.

Salt on a label is sodium × 2.5 — 400 mg sodium is 1.0 g salt. Tool 371 of 500 — GIFSQ
