Work out how much premix to add to a batch to lift a nutrient from its current level to the fortification target.
Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.
–
Addition needed (per 100 g)
–
Total nutrient to add
–
Premix per batch (g)
Equation: Addition needed = target − current (per 100 g). Total to add = addition × batch (kg) × 10. Premix (g) = total to add ÷ premix potency.
Method: Fortification practice per Codex General Principles for the Addition of Essential Nutrients to Foods (CXG 9-1987) and the US FDA fortification policy, 21 CFR 104.20; Health Canada Food and Drug Regulations B.01.401 set the permitted levels. Overage for processing and storage loss is a separate, product-specific decision and is not added here.
Assumptions: the premix is evenly distributed; potency is in the same nutrient unit per gram of premix as the target; the current level is the analysed level in the unfortified product.
Limitations: this tool does not add a processing overage and does not check the legal maximum for the nutrient — check the jurisdiction's permitted range before fortifying.
Rounding: addition to 1 decimal place; total and premix to 1 decimal place; intermediates unrounded.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value.

Worked example: Target 10 mg per 100 g, current 4 mg, premix potency 50 mg/g, batch 100 kg: addition 6.0 mg per 100 g, total 6000.0 mg, premix 120.0 g per batch.
