GIFSQ Tools · Module 14 — LIMS & Quality · Tool 270 of 500
Check one result against its specification: the midpoint, the tolerance half-width, how far the result sits from the centre, and whether it is inside the limits.
Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.
–
Specification midpoint
–
Tolerance half-width
–
Deviation from centre (%)
–
Inside specification
Equation: Midpoint = (lower limit + upper limit) ÷ 2. Tolerance half-width = (upper limit − lower limit) ÷ 2. Deviation (%) = (result − midpoint) ÷ half-width × 100; 0% is dead centre, ±100% is on a limit. The result is inside when it lies between the limits, endpoints included.
Method: Specification check per ISO/IEC 17025:2017, clause 7.8 (reporting of results) and the product specification that sets the limits: the tool compares the result with the limits — it does not set them.
Assumptions: the limits are the specification for this product and parameter; the deviation percentage only makes sense when the limits are symmetric about the target.
Limitations: being inside the specification is not the same as conforming with uncertainty — Tool 268 applies the guard band for the certificate.
Rounding: midpoint, half-width and deviation to 2 decimal places; intermediates unrounded.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value. Records are kept only in this browser on this device (localStorage); this is a device-only record aid, not a shared multi-user LIMS, and nothing is sent to any server.

Worked example: Result 10.2 against 9.5–10.5: midpoint 10.00, half-width 0.50, deviation 40.00% above centre — inside the specification.
Enter values above to see results.
Limits come from the product specification or the client contract; never widen a limit inside this tool to make a result pass. Tool 270 of 500 — GIFSQ
