Reconcile a rice milling run: enter the paddy in and the milled rice, head rice, bran and husk out to get total recovery, head rice yield, broken share and losses.
Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.
–
Total recovery (%)
–
Head rice yield (%)
–
Broken rice (%)
Equation: Total milling recovery (%) = milled rice ÷ paddy × 100. Head rice yield (%) = head rice ÷ paddy × 100. Broken rice (%) = (milled rice − head rice) ÷ milled rice × 100. Bran (%) = bran ÷ paddy × 100. Loss (%) = (paddy − milled rice − bran − husk) ÷ paddy × 100.
Method: Rice milling mass balance. A well-run mill recovers about 68–72% of the paddy as milled rice, with head rice (whole kernels at least three-quarters of a full grain) around 55–65% of the paddy; the rest is bran, husk and a small unaccounted loss.
Assumptions: all streams are weighed over the same run on the same moisture basis; head rice means whole kernels, and broken rice is the milled rice that is not head rice.
Limitations: the recovery says nothing about cooking quality or grade — chalkiness, grain length and moisture must be checked separately; losses from dust and moisture change are not separated here.
Rounding: all percentages to 2 decimal places; intermediates unrounded.

Worked example: 1000 kg of paddy; out: 680 kg milled rice (580 kg head rice), 80 kg bran, 200 kg husk. Total recovery = 68.00%; head rice yield = 58.00%; broken rice = (680 − 580) ÷ 680 = 14.71% of the milled rice; bran 8.00%; loss 4.00%.
Enter values above to see results.
Typical recovery: total 68–72%, head rice 55–65% of paddy. Broken rice above 25% of milled rice usually means the mill or the paddy needs attention. Tool 098 of 500 — GIFSQ
