Reconcile a dry maize milling run: enter the maize in and the grits, flour, germ and bran out to get the total yield and each fraction share.
Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.
–
Total yield (%)
–
Grits (%)
–
Loss (%)
Equation: Total yield (%) = (grits + flour + germ + bran) ÷ maize in × 100. Each fraction (%) = that fraction ÷ maize in × 100. Loss (%) = 100 − total yield (%).
Method: Dry maize milling mass balance. Degermination splits the kernel into grits and flour (the endosperm products), germ (recovered for oil) and bran with hominy feed; a well-run plant recovers about 92–96% of the maize as products, the rest being moisture and dust loss.
Assumptions: all streams are weighed over the same run on the same moisture basis; grits means the prime degermed endosperm fraction, not flour.
Limitations: the yield says nothing about product quality — fat in the grits, particle size and colour must be checked separately; moisture change during milling is part of the loss, not measured separately.
Rounding: all percentages to 2 decimal places; intermediates unrounded.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value.

Worked example: 1000 kg of maize in; out: 450 kg grits, 200 kg flour, 90 kg germ, 210 kg bran. Total out = 950 kg, so total yield = 95.00%; grits 45.00%, flour 20.00%, germ 9.00%, bran 21.00%; loss 5.00%.
Enter values above to see results.
Typical dry-milling yield: total 92–96%, grits 40–60%, germ 8–12%. Losses above 8% should be investigated. Tool 099 of 500 — GIFSQ
