GIFSQ Tools · Module 09 — Fruits, Vegetables, Beverages & Plant Foods · Tool 165 of 500
Plan an enzymatic browning experiment. Enter treatments, replicates, time points and sample size to get the total samples, readings and fruit needed.
Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.
–
Total samples
–
Total readings
–
Fruit needed (kg)
Equation: Total samples = treatments × replicates × time points. Total readings = total samples × readings per sample. Fruit needed = total samples × sample size.
Method: Balanced factorial design for enzymatic browning studies (polyphenol oxidase activity and colour change); colour by the browning index of Tool 164.
Assumptions: Every treatment × time point cell has the same number of replicates; each sample is used once and then discarded.
Limitations: This plans the sample count only — it does not set the treatment levels, the measurement times or the statistics; a pilot run should confirm the time points.
Rounding: Counts are whole numbers; fruit needed to 2 decimal places. Intermediate values are not rounded.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value.

Worked example: 4 treatments, 3 replicates, 5 time points, 20 g samples, 2 readings per sample. Samples = 4 × 3 × 5 = 60; readings = 60 × 2 = 120; fruit = 60 × 20 g = 1.20 kg.
Enter values above to see results.
A balanced design needs the same number of replicates for every treatment and time point. Add spare fruit for trimming and failed readings. Tool 165 of 500 — GIFSQ
