Plan an environmental monitoring programme: sampling sites across Zones 1–4 and the samples per month and per year at the chosen frequency.

Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.

–
Total sampling sites
–
Samples per month
–
Samples per year
Equation: Total sites = Zone 1 + Zone 2 + Zone 3 + Zone 4. Samples per month = total sites × samples per site per month. Samples per year = samples per month × 12.
Method: Environmental monitoring zoning per the zone concept in the FDA draft guidance on control of Listeria monocytogenes in ready-to-eat foods and the environmental monitoring requirements in FDA FSMA preventive controls (21 CFR 117.165) and ISO 22000:2018 verification activities. Zone definitions follow the industry-standard 1–4 model.
Assumptions: each site is sampled at the same frequency; the year total assumes the programme runs all 12 months.
Limitations: the plan counts samples — it does not set which organisms to test for or what the limits are; those come from the hazard analysis and the product risk.
Rounding: counts are whole numbers; no rounding applies.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value.
Worked example: Zones 1–4 with 8, 6, 4 and 2 sites sampled 4 times a month: 20 sites, 80 samples per month, 960 samples per year.

Enter values above to see results.

Zone 1 is food-contact surfaces; Zone 4 is outside production. More sites in Zone 1 and 2 is normal for ready-to-eat foods. Tool 252 of 500 — GIFSQ
