Turn a nutrient amount per serving into % Daily Value, with the source-of-nutrient band for the jurisdiction.

Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.

–
% Daily Value
–
Source band
–
% DV still needed to reach 100%
Equation: % Daily Value = amount per serving ÷ Daily Value × 100. Band: under 5% = low source; 5–19% = source; 20% or more = high source.
Method: US FDA Daily Values, 21 CFR 101.9(c)(8)(iv); Health Canada Daily Values, Food and Drug Regulations B.01.401; EU nutrient reference values, Regulation 1169/2011 Annex XIII; Codex NRVs, CXG 2-1985. The reference value entered must be the one for the jurisdiction selected — values differ between jurisdictions.
Assumptions: the amount is per serving as declared on the label; the Daily Value entered is for the same nutrient and the same population group.
Limitations: % DV is a labelling reference, not a personal requirement — individual needs vary; some nutrients (for example trans fat) have no Daily Value.
Rounding: % Daily Value to 1 decimal place; intermediates unrounded.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value.
Worked example: Iron 5 mg per serving, US FDA Daily Value 18 mg: 27.8% DV, band high source, 72.2% of the Daily Value remains.

Enter values above to see results.

The 5% / 20% band cut-offs are the US FDA and Health Canada convention for “source” and “high source” claims. Tool 364 of 500 — GIFSQ
