Dose a food colour for a batch from the target level in mg/kg, and work out the volume of your stock solution to measure.
Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.
–
Pure colour (mg)
–
Stock solution (mL)
–
Final level (mg/kg)
Equation: Pure colour (mg) = dose (mg/kg) × batch (kg). Stock solution (mL) = pure colour (mg) ÷ stock strength (mg/mL).
Method: Colour dosing against the maximum level in the Codex General Standard for Food Additives CXS 192-1995 for the food category, or the corresponding EU Regulation 1333/2008 or US FDA 21 CFR limit. Colour limits differ by jurisdiction and food category — the target level you enter must be at or below the limit for your food.
Assumptions: the colour is evenly mixed through the batch; the stock solution strength is the value for the solution as made up.
Limitations: colour strength fades with light, heat and pH, so the level at packing is not the level at the end of shelf life; confirm the shade with a trial.
Rounding: pure colour to 2 decimal places; stock volume to 2 decimal places; intermediates unrounded.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value.

Worked example: A 50 kg batch at 50 mg/kg with a 100 mg/mL stock: pure colour = 50 × 50 = 2,500.00 mg; stock to measure = 2,500 ÷ 100 = 25.00 mL.
Enter values above to see results.
Measure the stock solution by volume only if its strength is stated in mg/mL. Check the target against the legal maximum for your food category. Tool 214 of 500 — GIFSQ
