Brew ratio and extraction yield for coffee. Enter the dose, the brew water and, if measured, the TDS to get the ratio, the beverage weight and the extraction yield.
Try sample values — fills the form with the worked example below.
–
Brew ratio (1 : )
–
Beverage weight (g)
–
Extraction yield (%)
Equation: Brew ratio = water ÷ coffee. Beverage = water − 2 × coffee (grounds absorption). Extraction yield % = TDS % × beverage ÷ coffee.
Method: Coffee brewing mass balance; extraction yield formula of the Specialty Coffee Association (TDS × beverage mass ÷ dose).
Assumptions: Grounds absorb 2 g of water per gram of coffee; TDS was measured on the finished beverage.
Limitations: The 2 g per g absorption figure is a guide and varies with grind and roast; extraction yield needs a real TDS reading.
Rounding: Ratio, beverage and extraction to 2 decimal places. Intermediate values are not rounded.
This is a calculation aid, not a laboratory report — confirm against your accredited method before citing a value.

Worked example: 30 g coffee, 500 g water, TDS 1.30 %. Ratio = 500 ÷ 30 = 1 : 16.67; beverage = 500 − 60 = 440.00 g; extraction = 1.30 × 440 ÷ 30 = 19.07 %.
Enter values above to see results.
A common starting point is 1:15 to 1:17 coffee to water, with 18–22 % extraction. Grounds hold about 2 g of water per gram of coffee. Tool 175 of 500 — GIFSQ
