SOP: Examination of Internal Condition of Cans
GIFSQ — Global Institute for Food Safety & Quality
Principle
After the can is emptied and washed, its internal surface is examined for corrosion, lacquer defects and seam faults, and the seam dimensions are measured; swollen cans receive a special seam examination.
Procedure
Once the cans are emptied and washed, look over the inside surface for corrosion, blistered or defective lacquer, pitting, scratches, solder globules, discolouration, leaks, and any scorching along the seams
↓
Record whether the internal surface is lacquered or not
↓
Measure the seam dimensions
↓
In swollen cans, cut open the seam and examine it
Precautions
- Examine the internal surface only after the can has been emptied and washed.
- In the case of swells, check the internal condition of the can and the condition of the seams carefully before discarding the container.
