SOP: Determination of Proper Fill in lieu of Drained Weight in Canned Peas
GIFSQ — Global Institute for Food Safety & Quality
Principle
Proper fill of canned peas is an alternative to drained weight: the container is considered completely filled when its contents, poured out and returned, reach a defined distance below the top of the container.
Apparatus required
- Empty container of the same kind and size as the test container
Procedure
Empty one container into an empty container of the same kind and size, then pour everything back into its original container
↓
Fifteen seconds later, level off the returned contents without regard to how much liquid is present
Calculation
A container with a lid attached by double seam is considered completely filled when it is filled to the level 4.8 mm vertical distance below the top of the double seam. A glass container is considered completely filled when it is filled to the level 12.7 mm vertical distance below the top of the container.
Precautions
- Use an empty container of the same kind and size as the test container.
- Level off the contents after 15 seconds, irrespective of the quantity of liquid.
