ISO 22000
ISO 22000:2018 is the international standard for food safety management systems (FSMS), applicable to any organization in the food chain — from feed producers and farmers to processors, packagers, transporters, and retailers. It folds HACCP principles into a full management system built on the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle, with strong emphasis on leadership commitment and risk-based thinking.
The standard’s structure follows Annex SL, the same high-level framework as ISO 9001:2015 — which makes integration straightforward for companies already running a quality management system. Key elements include interactive communication across the chain, prerequisite programs (PRPs), operational prerequisite programs (OPRPs), and the HACCP plan itself, all tied together with management review and continual improvement.
Certification to ISO 22000 — or to GFSI-benchmarked schemes built on it, like FSSC 22000 — is increasingly a ticket to trade, especially in export markets. Compare it against SQF and BRCGS with our comparison guide, test your knowledge with the quizzes below, and map out your certification path.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between ISO 22000 and FSSC 22000?
ISO 22000 is the base standard. FSSC 22000 adds sector-specific prerequisite programs (ISO/TS 22002 series) plus extra scheme requirements — and unlike ISO 22000 alone, FSSC 22000 is benchmarked by GFSI, which many retailers require.
Does ISO 22000 require HACCP?
Yes. HACCP principles are embedded in Clause 8 of ISO 22000:2018. The standard doesn’t replace HACCP — it wraps it in a management system with leadership, communication, and continual improvement.
How long does ISO 22000 certification take?
Typically 6–12 months from gap analysis to certification audit for a mid-size facility, depending on how much of the system already exists. Stage 1 (documentation review) comes before Stage 2 (on-site audit).
Can small businesses implement ISO 22000?
Yes. The standard is deliberately scale-neutral — it specifies what must be achieved, not how. Small operations implement the same clauses with simpler documentation.
Is ISO 22000 recognized by GFSI?
ISO 22000 alone is not GFSI-benchmarked. FSSC 22000 — which builds on ISO 22000 — is. If your customers demand GFSI recognition, FSSC 22000 is the path.
