SOP: Tensile Test for Tinplate
GIFSQ — Global Institute for Food Safety & Quality
Principle
The tensile test probes the steel base by pulling a standard strip until it breaks and plotting the load–extension curve. Because the test demands both skill and time to make reproducible, it is rarely run — though it would tell a great deal about the steel’s mechanical properties.
Apparatus required
- Ordinary or “hard-beam” type tensile testing machine
Procedure
Measure and record the initial dimensions of the test piece carefully
↓
Pull the standard strip to failure in the tensile machine and plot the stress–strain curve
↓
During the test, record the load at the elastic limit, the load at or near the maximum tensile stress, and the load at the break point
↓
Remove the broken specimen and make measurements for further calculation
Temper grades of tinplate (Rockwell T 30 scale)
| Grade | Nomenclature | Rockwell T 30 |
|---|---|---|
| Deep drawing | TD | Below 58 |
| Ordinary temper | TO | 56 to 64 |
| High temper | TH | 62 to 72 |
Source notes
- Table 14-7 (relation of nominal thickness to weight, with cupping and bend test values) is illegible in the source extraction and is not reproduced here — flagged for printed-book verification.
