IFS (International Featured Standards)
If BRCGS is the retailers’ standard in the UK, IFS is its counterpart on the continent — especially for private label. Supply a German or French retailer’s own brand, and IFS Food certification is very likely non-negotiable.
Definition
IFS Food is a GFSI-benchmarked audit standard developed by European retail federations for assessing food suppliers — with a distinctive dual focus on food safety and product quality against customer specifications.
Key facts
- It covers HACCP-based food safety and quality management together — because retailers buying private label need the product safe and exactly to spec, every time.
- Scoring runs A (full compliance) to D, with KO — knock-out — criteria that fail the audit outright if missed. CCP management is a KO. There’s no negotiating those.
- Its stronghold is continental Europe: Germany, France, Italy, Spain. For own-brand supply there, it’s often the required standard.
- The IFS family extends the same philosophy to logistics, packaging materials, brokers, and household/personal care products.
- Version 8 streamlined the protocol and pushed harder on food safety culture and unannounced assessments.
Why it matters
The KO criteria are what give IFS its teeth — and what catch companies out. Suppliers walk into IFS audits treating them like any other, only to discover that a single KO nonconformity ends the whole thing regardless of the overall score. The practical advice: know the KO requirements cold before the audit, especially around CCPs and traceability. And take the quality half seriously — IFS auditors will fail you on specification control just as readily as on safety.
IFS scoring punishes major non-conformities hard — a single Major can sink the grade. Preparation means closing the gaps that score Majors, not polishing the easy clauses.
