Autonomously replicating DNA molecules (e.g. plasmids, cosmids, viruses and yeast artificial chromosomes) into which foreign DNA fragments can be inserted. They can then be transformed into suitable host cells and propagated. In addition to origins of replication, vectors usually contain selectable markers that allow selection of recombinant cells. They may also contain sequences that direct expression of cloned genes in host cells.
