Unsweetened means made, cooked, or served with no added sugar and no other sweetening agent, natural or artificial. Unsweetened chocolate is pure cocoa mass — bitter and intense, for baking rather than eating. Unsweetened yoghurt, plant milks, and breakfast cereals let the eater control sweetness or avoid it entirely. The label matters for people managing diabetes, weight, or dental health, and for cooks who want a neutral base. But unsweetened is not the same as sugar-free in every regulatory system, and naturally occurring sugars — in fruit, milk, or cocoa — remain. Taste expectations need adjusting: unsweetened foods taste stark to palates trained on sweetened versions, then normal again within weeks.
