Process by which RNA copies of template DNA strands are synthesized, catalysed by DNA-directed RNA polymerases. The initial products of transcription are typically processed and/or modified to give the mature RNA products, e.g. mRNA, rRNA and tRNA. In RNA viruses, RNA acts as the template for transcription; in this case the process is catalysed by RNA-directed RNA polymerases.
