Trail mix is a portable snack combining nuts, dried fruit, seeds, and often extras such as chocolate chips, coconut, or granola clusters. It was developed for hikers — the name comes from the trail — as a lightweight, energy-dense, no-preparation food: fats and protein from the nuts, quick sugars from the dried fruit, and crunch to keep it interesting. Commercial versions vary enormously in nutritional quality, from genuinely wholesome nut-and-seed blends to what is essentially confectionery with a health halo, heavy on chocolate and sweetened pieces. Portion control matters because the energy density is high — a small handful is a snack, the whole bag is a meal.
