The trachea is the windpipe — the main airway running from the larynx down into the chest, where it splits into the two bronchi serving the lungs. Its C-shaped rings of cartilage hold it open against the pressure changes of breathing, while its lining of mucus and cilia traps and sweeps inhaled particles upward. In food contexts the trachea matters for one reason above all: it sits immediately in front of the oesophagus, and the swallowing reflex must close it off precisely with every mouthful. When the reflex mistimes — through talking, laughing, or neurological disease — food enters the airway and choking results, which is why dysphagia management is a core concern in care catering.
