Inorganic compounds that contain the superoxide radical or ion. Formed when very reactive metallic elements (e.g. sodium, potassium, rubidium and caesium) react with oxygen. Powerful oxidizing agents and strong bases. Generated in prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells, where they are potentially harmful.
