A superfood is a food marketed as exceptionally rich in nutrients and health benefits — blueberries, kale, quinoa, chia seeds, salmon, and green tea are typical examples. The term has no legal or scientific definition; it is a marketing label rather than a nutritional category. Most so-called superfoods are indeed nutritious, being dense in vitamins, minerals, fibre, antioxidants, or omega-3 fats. The criticism is that the label implies magic properties no single food possesses, encourages expensive exotic imports over equally nutritious local foods, and distracts from the overall dietary pattern, which matters far more than any one ingredient. Nutrition professionals advise treating superfoods as good foods to include, not cures.
