Stored food is food that is kept for later use rather than eaten fresh — held in a dry store, vegetable store, refrigerator, or freezer until needed. Human civilisation rests on stored food: grain in silos, root vegetables in clamps and cellars, salted and dried meats, and today the chilled and frozen supply chain. Each storage method works by slowing the microorganisms and enzymes that cause spoilage — cold slows them, drying and salting starve them of water, and airtight packing keeps new contamination out. Successful storage depends on correct conditions, good stock rotation, and packaging that protects against moisture, pests, and odours. Poorly stored food is a leading source of waste and of foodborne illness.
