A State Registered dietitian was a dietitian listed on the UK Health Professions Council’s register, having completed an approved degree or postgraduate course in dietetics, with the abbreviation SRD. The title signalled that the practitioner met national standards of education, clinical training, and professional conduct, and was permitted to practise dietetics — assessing nutritional needs, prescribing therapeutic diets, and advising on medical nutrition. The register protected the public by distinguishing qualified dietitians from unregulated nutrition advisers. In the UK the regulatory framework has since evolved, with the Health and Care Professions Council now maintaining the register and protected titles, but SRD remains recognisable as the historic mark of a fully qualified dietitian.
