Genus of fungi of the class Hyphomycetes. Occur in soil, hay and other plant products. Stachybotrys alternans may be responsible for food spoilage. Ingestion or inhalation of satratoxins produced by S. atra on foods may cause stachybotryotoxicosis (a mycotoxicosis) in humans, horses, cattle and poultry.
