A solution is a homogeneous mixture in which a solid substance, the solute, is dissolved uniformly in a liquid, the solvent. Sugar in tea, salt in brine, and flavourings in a syrup are everyday solutions: no particles visible, the same composition in every sip. Solutions differ from suspensions, where particles hang undissolved and eventually settle. Concentration decides behaviour: a weak brine flavours, a saturated brine preserves, and solubility limits how much will dissolve at a given temperature. Cooking is applied solution chemistry, from stocks and syrups to marinades and pickles. Understanding solutions helps the cook control extraction, seasoning, and preservation with precision rather than guesswork.
