Sialoaerophagy is the excessive swallowing of saliva mixed with air. We all swallow saliva constantly and take in small amounts of air with food, but when the habit becomes excessive, the swallowed air accumulates in the stomach and intestines, causing bloating, belching, and abdominal discomfort. It is associated with anxiety, rapid eating, chewing gum, and ill-fitting dentures, and it overlaps with aerophagia, the swallowing of air alone. The saliva component distinguishes it: nervous or habitual frequent swallowing gulps both together. Management addresses the underlying habit, encouraging slower eating, nasal breathing, and anxiety reduction. It is a benign but uncomfortable condition, often mistaken for a digestive disorder.
