Methods for distinguishing between closely related strains of microorganisms based on differences in their surface antigens. Strains are exposed to antibodies specific for certain antigens and those that interact are detected by agglutination or precipitation. Reactions to an appropriate range of antibodies distinguish a strain in terms of its surface antigens.
