Any member of the invertebrate class Ascidiacea (subphylum Urochordata, also called Tunicata), which are found attached to natural and man-made structures in seawater; worldwide distribution. Some species are consumed as a delicacy in some parts of the world; particularly popular in France (often eaten raw with lemon juices) and in Japan.
