The School Food Trust was a national body set up in 2005 in the United Kingdom, funded by the Department for Education and Skills, to improve food and nutritional education in schools. It developed the nutrient-based standards for school lunches, trained school cooks, and produced guidance and resources to help schools serve healthier meals and teach children about food. Its work responded to public concern about the quality of school dinners, amplified by high-profile campaigns of the time. The Trust later became an independent charity, continuing to advise schools, caterers, and policymakers on children’s nutrition. Though its institutional form has changed, its standards shaped a generation of school food policy, embedding the idea that the school lunch is a public health intervention as well as a meal.
