Genus of Gram positive, obligately aerobic coccoid bacteria of the family Nocardiaceae. Occur in soil and aquatic habitats. Species may be used in the synthesis of carotenoids or enzymes. Rhodococcus erythropolis is used in the production of lactone hydrolases for the biotransformation (debittering) of terpenes in citrus juices.
