The product name is the legally recognised name of a food as it appears on the label, and food law treats it as one of the compulsory particulars on prepacked foods in the United Kingdom and the wider European framework. It must tell shoppers truthfully what the food is, either through its customary name, a legal name laid down in compositional standards, or a descriptive name when neither exists. Brand names and fanciful titles may appear alongside it, but they cannot stand in for it. The product name also anchors other label duties: it determines which reserved descriptions apply, guides allergen emphasis, and lets enforcement officers check that the food matches its claimed identity. Getting it wrong can make an otherwise compliant product mislabelled.
