Pre-packaged, or pre-packed, describes food that is packaged before sale rather than weighed, cut, or assembled in front of the customer. The vast majority of modern grocery retail is pre-packaged: sealed packs with fixed weights, full labelling, and barcodes that enable self-service shopping, long supply chains, and efficient checkout. Labelling law treats pre-packaged foods distinctly, requiring ingredient lists, nutrition declarations, allergen emphasis, date marks, and business addresses, information that loose foods sold at delicatessen counters need not carry in full. The format’s advantages are hygiene, portion consistency, shelf life, and information; its costs are packaging waste and the distance it puts between shoppers and the food’s origins. The growth of pre-packaged fresh produce, once sold loose, shows the format’s continuing advance.
