A nutrition claim is any wording, logo, or image on food packaging that states or implies the product has particular beneficial nutritional properties. Regulated examples include “low fat,” “high in fibre,” “source of calcium,” and “reduced sugar,” each permitted only when the food meets strict compositional thresholds. In the EU, claims must come from an authorised list and meet conditions of use; unauthorised claims are illegal regardless of truth. The system exists because claims strongly influence purchasing, and without rules, marketing departments would stretch every nutrient into a selling point. Nutrition claims differ from health claims, which link a nutrient to a bodily function or disease risk and face tougher authorisation. For shoppers, the practical advice is to check the claim against the nutrition table, since a “low-fat” product can still be high in sugar.
