An infestation of living tissue by the larvae, maggots, of flies. In food contexts, myiasis is a concern in livestock, where blowfly strike damages sheep, and in poor sanitation settings where flies breed in waste and contaminate food. Certain fly species lay eggs on wounds, in body orifices, or on food, and the hatching larvae feed on the tissue. Human cases range from unpleasant skin infestations to serious wound infections in tropical regions. Prevention depends on fly control, prompt wound care, hygienic food storage, and proper waste disposal. While medicinal maggots are used therapeutically for wound cleaning, uncontrolled myiasis is a medical and veterinary problem.
