A suspension of magnesium hydroxide in water, long used as an antacid and laxative. As an antacid it neutralises excess stomach acid, relieving heartburn and indigestion; in larger doses it draws water into the bowel, producing a gentle laxative effect usually within hours. Available over the counter in original and flavoured versions, it is a staple of home medicine cabinets. The chalky taste is characteristic. People with kidney disease should consult a doctor before use, since impaired kidneys cannot clear excess magnesium. As with all laxatives, it is intended for occasional use rather than chronic constipation management.
