A type of laxative that eases the passage of stool by coating the bowel contents and the colon wall with an oily film, reducing friction and water absorption. Liquid paraffin is the classic example. The lubricating layer helps hard, dry stools slide through more easily, which can benefit people who must avoid straining, such as those with haemorrhoids or after certain surgeries. Because the oil is not absorbed, it can leak and stain, and prolonged use may impair absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Lubricant laxatives are intended for short-term use under guidance, with fibre, fluids, and activity preferred for long-term bowel regularity.
