A highly refined mineral oil used in medicine as a mild laxative and lubricant. Taken by mouth, liquid paraffin coats the bowel contents and softens stool, easing constipation, particularly where straining must be avoided. Because it is not absorbed, it passes through the gut largely unchanged. Long-term use is discouraged: it can interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins and may leak from the anus. In food and pharmaceutical manufacturing, related highly purified mineral oils serve as lubricants and processing aids under strict regulatory limits. The medicinal product should be used short-term and as directed by a healthcare professional.
