Hygienic describes conditions, practices, or environments that are clean and safe — where harmful microorganisms have been controlled or destroyed and health is protected. A hygienic kitchen has cleanable surfaces, safe water, proper waste disposal, and handlers who wash their hands; hygienic manufacturing wraps those basics in HACCP systems, protective clothing, and validated cleaning. The word also carries the looser sense of “producing healthy conditions” — hygienic housing, hygienic water supplies. In food law, hygiene is not aspirational but mandatory: regulations specify the hygienic design of premises and equipment, the hygienic handling of food, and the exclusion of pests and contaminants. Hygiene is the daily, unglamorous foundation of food safety.
