Gastropathy is the general medical term for any disease of the stomach — a deliberately broad label covering disorders of the gastric lining and wall without specifying the nature. It embraces erosive gastropathy from NSAIDs or alcohol, congestive gastropathy from portal hypertension, and chemical gastropathy from bile reflux, among others. Clinicians use it when describing a pattern of injury seen at endoscopy before the precise cause is pinned down, or as an umbrella in classification. Unlike “gastritis,” which strictly implies inflammation confirmed by biopsy, gastropathy simply denotes that the stomach is diseased. Treatment always targets the underlying process — removing the irritant, suppressing acid, or managing the systemic disease behind it.
