Gastrodynia is simply another name for gastralgia — the medical term for pain in the stomach. It describes the gnawing, burning, or cramping ache felt in the upper abdomen when the stomach is irritated, inflamed, ulcerated, or in spasm, without specifying the underlying disease. Like gastralgia, it is a symptom label rather than a diagnosis: the same pain might reflect indigestion, gastritis, a peptic ulcer, or gallbladder trouble. Clinicians pin down the cause through the pain’s relationship to meals, its response to antacids, and investigations such as endoscopy or H. pylori testing. The term belongs to an older stratum of medical vocabulary; contemporary notes are more likely to record “epigastric pain” and then name the disease behind it.
