A fruitarian is someone whose diet consists predominantly or entirely of fruit — typically including nuts and seeds botanically classed as fruits, and sometimes vegetables that are botanically fruits such as tomatoes and cucumbers. Motivations range from ethical beliefs about not harming plants, to perceived health benefits and spiritual philosophies. Nutritionally, a strict fruit-only diet is highly problematic: it is typically deficient in protein, essential fatty acids, vitamin B12, vitamin D, calcium, iron, and zinc, while supplying very large amounts of fructose. Dietitians and physicians warn that long-term fruitarianism risks malnutrition, muscle wasting, and dental erosion, and they advise anyone attempting it to seek professional supervision — a warning borne out by documented deficiency cases.
