Freedom Food — now rebranded as RSPCA Assured — was the farm assurance and food labelling scheme run by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. It set detailed welfare standards for farm animals covering housing, space allowances, handling, transport, and slaughter, going beyond legal minimums; farms were independently inspected, and products from participating suppliers could carry the scheme’s label. For shoppers it offered a credible, third-party welfare mark on meat, eggs, and dairy. The scheme pushed retailers and producers toward higher welfare sourcing and gave welfare-conscious consumers a clear choice. Its rebranding reflected the RSPCA’s wish to put its own trusted name on the label, but the underlying model — standards, inspection, certification — continues.
