Food labelling is the legally required practice of printing defined information on packaged foods so consumers can make informed choices. Under EU-derived rules, labels must show the product name, a list of ingredients in descending order of weight, allergen declarations, the net quantity, a best-before or use-by date, any special storage or use conditions, the name and address of the manufacturer or seller, and nutrition information — with country of origin required for certain foods. Labelling law also polices the truthfulness of descriptions and nutrition or health claims, which must be substantiated. Accurate labels protect people with allergies, help manage diets, and underpin fair trade; misleading labels are an offence enforced by trading standards and food authorities.
