The Food Labelling Regulations 1996 were the UK statutory instrument that, for many years, set out the detailed labelling requirements for food sold in Britain. They specified the mandatory particulars on packaging — including the name of the food, ingredients listed in descending order of weight, quantities, durability dates, storage conditions, and the packer’s name and address — and they controlled the accuracy of descriptions, nutrition claims, and health claims. The regulations implemented EU directives into domestic law and were enforced by local authorities. They have since been substantially superseded by directly applicable EU food information law and, after Brexit, by retained UK versions of that law, but they remain a landmark in the development of modern British labelling rules.
