The endomorph is the body type that is short, stocky, and easily puts on weight — one of the three classical somatotypes, contrasted with the tall lean ectomorph and the muscular mesomorph. Endomorphs are characterised by a rounder build, wider hips and waist, slower metabolism, and a tendency to store fat readily. The classification dates to 1940s constitutional theory and survives mainly as descriptive shorthand in fitness culture, where the “endomorph diet” prescribes portion control and lower carbohydrates. Science treats somatotypes as rough, overlapping descriptions — not destinies — since body composition responds to diet, activity, sleep, and genes together. The concept’s usefulness is in recognising that people gain and lose weight at different rates; its misuse is in telling anyone their build fixes their fate.
