An embolism is the condition in which an artery is blocked by a blood clot or other travelling mass — an embolus — interrupting normal blood flow to the tissue beyond. A clot forming in a leg vein can break loose, travel through the heart, and lodge in the lungs as a pulmonary embolism; one forming in the heart can reach the brain as a stroke. The blocked tissue, starved of oxygen, begins to die within minutes. Diet connects through the risk factors: the atherosclerosis fed by smoking, hypertension, and adverse lipid profiles creates the plaques whose rupture launches emboli, while dehydration and long immobility thicken the blood toward clotting. Treatment is anticoagulation, clot-busting drugs, or surgical removal — a race against tissue death. Prevention is the long game of cardiovascular risk management.
