Colporrhoea is a discharge of mucus from the colon, an older medical term describing the passage of mucus, with or without stool, that signals irritation or disease of the large intestine. Causes include infections, inflammatory bowel disease, and irritable bowel syndrome, where excess mucus accompanies cramping and altered bowel habit. The symptom prompts investigation of the colon’s condition rather than treatment in itself. Modern gastroenterology describes the finding in plainer terms, but the classical word captures a clinical observation still relevant: healthy stools contain little visible mucus, so its presence deserves attention.
