A chylomicron is a large lipoprotein particle that carries dietary fat from the intestine into the bloodstream. After a fatty meal, intestinal cells package triglycerides, cholesterol, and fat-soluble vitamins into chylomicrons, which enter the lymph and then the blood, delivering their cargo to muscle and adipose tissue. The enzyme lipoprotein lipase strips triglycerides from them along the way. Blood drawn soon after eating appears milky with chylomicrons, which is why lipid tests require fasting. Their efficient clearance matters: impaired chylomicron metabolism causes severe hypertriglyceridaemia and pancreatitis risk.
